Canada approves Moderna COVID-19 vaccine

Global News shows that Health Canada has now given the green light to Moderna's Coronavirus COVID-19 vaccine. Canada has approved the Moderna Coronavirus COVID-19 vaccine. This rollout will be different from Pfizer-BioNTech's rollout.

The Moderna vaccine does not require very cold freezers, such as the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccine made by Pfizer needs to be kept extremely cold: minus 70 degrees Celsius, which is colder than winter in Antarctica. Moderna has said that its vaccine needs to be frozen too, but only at minus 20 Celsius. Since there will be limited vaccine doses at first, immunization managers across the country will need to have plans to certainly distribute any and all vaccine doses that are available.

Health Canada has approved Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for use in this country, with 168,000 doses really expected to arrive by the end of the year.

The regulator announced the approval on Wednesday after completing a review of the Massachusetts-based biotechnology company's clinical trial data.

"The data provided supports favourably the efficacy of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine as well as its safety," Health Canada said in a notice authorizing use of the vaccine for people over the age of 18.

Canada expects to receive 1.2 million doses from both Pfizer and Moderna by Jan. 31.
