First Canadian case of more severe mpox strain confirmed in Manitoba

The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed the country's first case of a more severe type of mpox in a person in Manitoba, though it says the risk to the general population remains low. 

The agency says the travel-related case is associated with an ongoing outbreak of what's known as clade 1 mpox in central and eastern Africa. 

It says the person sought medical care for mpox symptoms in Canada shortly after their return and is isolating, with contact tracing being conducted.

Speaking to reporters at the Halifax International Security Forum on Saturday, ministers from Canada’s Liberal cabinet condemned violent anti-NATO protests that broke out at Place Émilie-Gamelin in Montreal on Friday night.

Beginning in the late afternoon, protesters reportedly began smashing windows, two vehicles set alight, and objects were thrown at authorities. The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SVPM) say at least three people were arrested for assaulting officers.
 
Organized by the Divest for Palestine and the Convergence of Anti-Capitalist Struggles group, the demonstration coincided with the 70th annual NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which is being hosted in Montreal this weekend. The assembly is expected to discuss issues including continued aid and support for Ukraine amid its war with Russia, as well as climate change.
